Couples Counseling

We keep talking about it, but nothing changes.

When Neither of You Feels Heard

Maybe you have had the same conversation dozens of times. One of you gets defensive. Someone shuts down. Someone pushes harder because they do not feel heard.

Couples therapy can help us slow down what keeps happening between you and begin building a relationship that feels safer, more connected, and more like a partnership.

Two People Can Experience the Same Relationship Differently

You and your partner can be present for the exact same interaction and leave with different experiences of what happened.

Understanding your partner’s experience doesn’t require agreeing with their interpretation.

Communication Is More Than Talking

Many couples already talk about the problem—a lot. The difficulty is what happens once the conversation starts.

Better communication is learning to express what is happening for you while becoming more capable of hearing what is happening for the person across from you.

When Protection Creates Distance

When a relationship does not feel emotionally safe, people protect themselves. You might withdraw, become defensive, avoid difficult conversations, get angry before you can be hurt, or say you are fine when you are not.

Shared Responsibilities and Partnership

Sometimes the argument really is about dishes, laundry, money, childcare, schedules, or appointments. But often there is something underneath the task: Do you notice what needs to be done? Can I rely on you?

The goal is creating a partnership both people experience as fair, reliable, and valued.

Building Trust

Trust is built through hundreds of smaller experiences: dependability, honesty, care with vulnerability, responsiveness, repair, and reliability.

When trust has been damaged, telling someone to “just trust me” does not restore it. Trust usually has to be experienced repeatedly before it can be felt again.

When Trust Has Been Broken by Infidelity

Couples therapy is not about rushing someone toward forgiveness. Understanding circumstances surrounding infidelity does not excuse the decision to be unfaithful. Accountability and curiosity can exist together.

We’re on the same team. There’s a problem between us. Let’s figure out what we’re going to do with it.

You don’t have to know exactly what to say. If something here feels familiar, we can start there.
