How Would You Describe Your Relationship With Alcohol?

You do not necessarily need to answer, “Am I an alcoholic?” to have a useful conversation about alcohol.

What role does it have in your life? What do you get from it? What does it cost you? Is the relationship you have with it the relationship you want?

Maybe It Started Out Fun. But Has It Turned Into Something Else?

Substance use may begin as social, recreational, enjoyable, or occasional. But sometimes life gets harder and the role of the substance changes.

Something you once used because you wanted to may gradually become something you rely on because you do not want to feel the way you feel without it.

When Substance Use Becomes a Coping Skill

Negative coping strategies usually persist because they work in the short term. A substance may numb feelings, quiet thoughts, reduce anxiety, help you sleep, or create distance from something painful.

If we take away a coping strategy without understanding what it was helping you cope with, we’ve only addressed part of the problem.

Ambivalence, Shame & Recovery

You do not need to arrive ready to accept a label or already certain whether you want moderation, abstinence, or another change. We can talk honestly about ambivalence.

Recovery is about more than not using. It is also about building a life and coping system that does not require the substance to do so much emotional work for you.

You can take responsibility for your behavior without making shame your treatment plan.

Ready to Talk?

You don’t have to know exactly what to say. If something here feels familiar, we can start there.
